On July 7, 2018 the Jazz a Vienne Festival played host to modern hip-hop legends Mos Def (Yasiin Bey) and Talib Kweli. Together they made up Black Star, the acclaimed duo once credited with pulling hip-hop away from the glorification of vices and back to an intelligent examination of cultural and racial issues. In this concert, they are joined by the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, the eight-piece Chicago-based rap and instrumental group, seven of which are sons of the trumpeter Phil Cohran.
Throughout this Parisian soirée, the American pianist increases the number of held notes, winks and small asides to tantalize the other members of his trio: rock-solid bassist Derrick Hodge and gifted drummer Chris Dave, all sweat and concentration under his “Undefeated” cap.
